Mental Health Foundation applauds funding reinstatement

Media release

16 June

The Mental Health Foundation commends the Government’s decision to restore funding to the Girls’ Self Defence Project.

Through the Ministry of Social Development, the project, that promotes self defence, builds self-esteem and confidence in young girls along with teaching them the skills to deal with difficult and challenging situations, will now be funded for a further 12 months.

“For the past 15 years the Girls’ Self Defence Project has made a positive difference to the development of many young girls mental and physical wellbeing,” says Judi Clements, Mental Health Foundation Chief Executive. “We are extremely happy to see that the Government has reinstated the projects funding and are confident the benefits will impact positively on the community.”

The Girls’ Self Defence Project is run by the Women’s Self Defence Network and teaches tailored courses nationwide in schools for Years 3–4, 7–8 and 10–12.
