Stewart's background lies in the corporate world, including a long stint in Dubai during the 1980s with the (then) fledgling construction company McConnell/Dowell. After moving back to New Zealand, he took up a role with TVNZ as Chief Financial Officer during a time of big change - deregulation was in full flight and TVNZ was undergoing the transition from a government department to a state-owned enterprise.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Stewart worked for a technology company, Provenco, where he witnessed the highs and lows of the dot com bubble burst.

Stewart decided to take up his position at the Foundation because he wanted to move out of the pure commercial world and into something he felt was adding value to society in New Zealand.

He lives with his wife in Devonport and, during the holidays, likes to visit his daughters, who live in Hong Kong and Sydney.
