MEDIA RELEASE

6 January, 2009

The Mental Health Foundation is delighted that Marie Hull-Brown has been awarded the Queen's Service Medal for services to the Foundation in the 2009 New Year Honours. Marie, who began work at the Foundation in 1988 shortly after her official ‘retirement', is widely known and respected for her work promoting positive ageing and the wellbeing of older people.

"Marie has been a dedicated supporter of the Mental Health Foundation for more than 20 years, and has made a significant contribution to promoting awareness of mental health issues for older people and to the mental health sector as a whole," says Deb Christensen, deputy chair of the board. "Through her life and work Marie is also a wonderful role model for positive ageing."

Also recognised in the Honours list were Colyn Devereux-Kay and Oscar Kightley who became members of The New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and to television and theatre, respectively.

Both are high-profile supporters of the Foundation who have over the years donated much of their time to support its work.

"We continue to be appreciative of their ongoing commitment to the mental health sector and the Mental Health Foundation," Ms Christensen says.

Colyn Devereux-Kay is the director of EGG Maternity, which in 2007 formed a partnership with the Foundation to raise funds and provide information about postnatal depression. A brochure produced by the partners, entitled Postnatal Depression: Getting the Support You Need, has become one of the most popular items requested from the Foundation's Resource & Information Service.

Oscar Kightley, along with David Fane, Mario Gaoa and Shimpal Lelisi from the bro'Town television series, has consistently supported the Foundation by modelling limited-edition t-shirts for mental health awareness and fundraising campaigns, and donating original artwork for auction.
