Our team and what we do
The Policy & Research team is based in the Wellington Mental Health Foundation office. We focus on systemic advocacy rather than providing individual advocacy services. This means we promote changes to attitudes and behaviours, policies, systems or laws that impact negatively on people with experience of mental illness.
The role of this team is to:
- Undertake Like Minds, Like Mine research projects.
- Develop policy advice including submissions, collaborative projects and networks.
- Contribute to submissions and health policy issues from a mental health advocacy perspective.
- Contribute to a number of community projects. Previous and current examples include the development of The Law and Mental Health Toolkit (2008); The Wellington Regional Resettlement Strategy (2008); regular regional mental health promotion forums; and contributions to local and national community and voluntary sector networks.
- Give input and advice into a number of projects which are led by government agencies such as Child, Youth and Family (CYF), the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ministry of Social Development (MSD).
- Implement recommendations from our previous research in order to support and advocate for people with experience of mental illness.
- Encourage the media to promote positive messages around mental health and social inclusion.
