Foreword
From Judi Clements CEO Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand.
We welcome you to this summer edition of MindNet, an e-bulletin for people interested in mental health and mental health promotion.
The theme of this bulletin - in keeping perhaps with our recent collective experience of back to work after the holiday period - is 'mental health in the workplace.'
We are honoured to have a guest editorial by world-renowned Professor Cary Cooper of Lancaster University in the UK. His suggestion for organisational well being audits will surely strike a chord with many.
Beyond that, I hope the other articles prove to be informative and thought-provoking.
We've also included in this edition a research update on the National Depression Campaign, a three-year public health campaign funded by the Ministry of Health and managed by the Mental Health Foundation. The initial phase has been very successful, with the TV messages by All Black legend John Kirwan generating an encouraging response to the 0800 111 757 helpline, managed by Lifeline.
Looking forward, we'd like to theme each MindNet edition in 2007, and will work towards a focus on topics such as:
- Phase four launch of Like Minds, Like Mine. This long-running campaign can be considered one of the most successful social marketing projects. The launch of phase four television messages will give us an opportunity to profile the campaign, and discuss its effects. How far have we come in reducing stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness? We invite your contributions to discussion of this.
- Mental Health Awareness Week in October has as its international theme: Transcultural Mental Health in a changing world: Building a Global response. Of course we'll be giving this a New Zealand angle.
As always, we'll include at least one article connecting the theme and the benefits of physical activity for mental health and well being.
The deadlines for supplying material are:
Autumn - April 15
Winter - June 29
Spring - September 28
Summer 2007/8 - November 30
