Issue 20 - 2010

ISSN 1178-2587

Foreword

Judi ClementsWelcome to Issue 20 of MindNet. With the cold, wet and even snowy weather around the country recently, it's beginning to feel as if winter is truly here.

At this time of year it's good to focus on our mental and physical health - what we need to get through the winter fit, well and feeling part of the wider community.

In this issue we bring you:

Recent mental health news

An article about depression and ageing well

Carrie Briffet finds out what strategy medical students would use to support community based suicide prevention.

Grant Cooper tells us about a rural mental health event to fight stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness and we explore what help is available for Korean Kiwis with experience of mental illness.

We profile mental health promoters Charlie Sheng Tang and Rudy Bakker.  We provide a reading list about nutrition and mental health and a book review that explores an evidence based curriculum for people with serious psychiatric disabilities to achieve nutritional health.

We also offer readers the opportunity to tell us what they think about MindNet in our 2010 readership survey. Those that complete the survey and provide contact details, go in the draw for a $50 MTA voucher.  The survey will remain open until Friday 13 August.

We hope you enjoy reading the articles in this issue and, remember, you can also share your feedback by leaving a comment at the bottom of each page.

We are always looking for case studies and profiles about people and projects in New Zealand with a focus on mental health promotion and wellness.

If you can recommend a wellness or mental health promotion service, project or programme that we could feature in MindNet - or would like to contribute an article yourself - please email mindnet@mentalhealth.org.nz

Naku iti-nei,
Judi Clements
