Full text: This paper examines Māori research practices in the context of a current project exploring the health of Māori men. Drawing on experiences of the researchers in undertaking the study to date, we outline some of the major issues that have arisen and examine the application of tikanga Maori in a research context.

Psychological health of men with partners who have post-partum depression.

Abstract: Although many men in the postnatal period experience a variety of mental health problems, those who have a partner with PPD are themselves at increased risk for experiencing psychological symptoms and disturbances. More attention from health professionals to men's mental health in the postnatal period may be beneficial to the entire family system.

Gambling and problem gambling among recently sentenced male prisoners in four New Zealand prisons.

Abstract: Few men had sought or received help for gambling problems prior to imprisonment or during their present incarceration. This highlights the potential for assessment and treatment programs in prison to reduce recidivism and adverse effects of problem gambling and gambling-related offending.

Full text: Health care service delivery takes into account many patient factors, such as age, ethnicity, socio-economic status - and sex. While the place of "women's health" is now well established in health care, many contributors to this special men's health issue of the Journal believe that "men's health" has not received sufficient, specific attention.

Abstract: Services in Australia are matching (and sometimes leading) those in other countries with respect to assessing and providing support for psychosocial health in expectant and new mothers. Abstract: Emotional distress, constrained by traditional notions of masculinity, may explain why depression in men can often be hidden, overlooked, not discussed or 'acted out'. There are implications for the types of questions asked of men to detect depressive symptoms.
